Custom one-off statement lighting in a stunning architect designed, coastal style home

We recently had our work featured on interior design site Houzz, as part of a profile on Hamptons-style homes in Australia.

We were the Electrical Contractors for this project, responsible for all lighting and electrical requirements, working alongside the builder. As you can see this is a stunning BGD Architects designed home, a masterpiece of architecture and design with no expense spared, with interior design by Cove Interiors.

Definitely, one of the favourite properties we have worked on!

Part of the uniqueness of this home is the large statement pendant lights that dominate the lounge, pictured above. They were not actually lights but driftwood chandeliers by Hermon & Hermon that the owner imported from overseas. We then had to wire them up with globes and cabling to ensure they met Australian Electrical Standards – making them a custom one-off piece of statement lighting.

If you want to see other projects we have worked on you can browse our Houzz profile, which also features a portfolio selection.

Solar Showing No Signs of Slowing Down

A surge in solar installations has taken the south-east Queensland region to more than 250,000 homes with rooftop solar – and the total inverter capacity to more than 800MW. With more and more education on the benefits of solar power, many residents are taking advantage of it…and it’s showing no signs of slowing down!

The suggestion that solar is no longer a good investment due to the tariff changes could not be further from the truth. While incentives have been reduced, the upfront price of solar power systems has also been reduced. Solar has actually never been more affordable (especially at Dan the Sparky Man seeing we offer no interest payment plans on all of our systems) and it is increasing in popularity as depicted below.

March saw 3,250 rooftop solar arrays officially metered, and another 4,000 applications for solar panels were received according to new data from Energex. That makes rooftop solar in the south-east corridor managed by Energex the sixth biggest power station in the state. In fact, more than 11 per cent of total residential power consumption in the area is now sourced from embedded generation – namely rooftop solar.

This recent data from Energex delivers some other interesting insights also. One is that the actual amount of money paid out for feed in tariffs is declining. That’s because around 700 homes changed owners, meaning that their rooftop systems changed from the old 44c/kWh rate to the 8c/kWh rate. That is bringing the average feed in tariff down to 37.5c/kWh.

So, if you have been considering getting solar power or would like to know a bit more about it, please do not hesitate to contact us today. With the feed-in tariff now sitting at 8c per kWh (less than you pay to import electricity), it is now more important than ever to have a professional accurately size a system to meet your need for electricity.

At DTSM, we employ only fully licensed, Master Electricians, who are also accredited for solar installations in Gold Coast by the Clean Energy Council of Australia, to install and maintain your system. We are one of the preferred installers for Origin Energy and have installed thousands of systems right across the Gold Coast and surrounding regions. With more than a decade of experience in the industry, you can rely on us.

Lighting Tips & Tricks for your Bathroom

There’s nothing dreamy and or luxurious about a simple ceiling light in the bathroom. Designers now use dimmers, chandeliers and decorative wall sconces, low lights and high lights to bring a special look into the bathroom.

Lighting is crucial to how well your bathroom functions, not just how good it looks. The trick to bathroom lighting, and creating both ambience and functionality, is to use multiple layers. Include makeup lighting, place decorative ceiling lights over the tub area and light up any art displayed. In addition, add perimeter recessed lighting. For sparkle, use crystal or glass.

LED lighting is the perfect solution when looking to create a soft glow in the master bath, but they have to be positioned correctly. This type of lighting works best when you want to light underneath the vanity (one that is a separate piece of furniture, on legs), on the sides of niches or shelving, and as cove lighting on the ceiling.

Crystal chandeliers or beaded lighting can move out of the dining room and into the bathroom for a dreamy touch. Just hang a crystal pendant over the sink and mirror to sprinkle a soft glow throughout the space.

Solar for Business

During the process of running a business, entrepreneurs are always looking for ways to reduce costs and become more profitable. One option that many businesses are now considering is investing in solar power. If you’re thinking about solar for your company, we’ve got the reasons why it’s worth the investment.

Prices have fallen

Solar isn’t exactly a new technology as it’s been used in some capacity for more than 40 years. For the majority of solar power’s history, solar panels have been considered to be very expensive. In the past, many homeowners and businesses could not justify paying so much for a solar power system. However, thanks to economies of scale and improvements in production processes, the prices of solar panels have been falling dramatically. In today’s market, the prices of solar are much more reasonable than they’ve ever been before, and are even cheaper than retail electricity in numerous places.

Reduction (or elimination) of power bill

Having a solar power system installed in Gold Coast will mean your business could pay just a fraction of what you are currently paying for electricity. The cost per unit of your current energy costs is likely to be much higher than what you would spend for solar power.

Great return on investment

Government incentives and the decrease of solar equipment costs means installing solar power is a sound investment and a good financial decision for businesses. Investing in solar power generates both long-term savings and quick payback.

It’s reliable

Once installed, a solar power system will require little maintenance and will provide electricity quietly and cleanly for 25 to 40 years, with most solar panels carrying a 25-year warranty.

Earning the “green” label

Having solar power will result in reduced consumption of fuels, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and pollution. By using this alternative source, your business can express its participation in the battle against global warming and can reduce the country’s dependence on fossil fuels. Going green will not only reduce operation expenses but will serve as a great PR and marketing tool. Having an environmentally responsible image can be great for your company, as it can generate a positive response from consumers.

At Dan the Sparky Man, we employ only fully licensed, Master Electricians, who are also accredited for solar installations by the Clean Energy Council of Australia, to install and maintain your system. Solar has never been more affordable & we offer no interest payment plans on all of our systems. Talk to us today if you want to know more about having a solar system installed at your business. With more than a decade of experience in the industry, you can count on us.

What type of kitchen describes you best? Whether you’re into an open space design or can’t live without an island, here’s a variety of ideas for fresh kitchens worth entertaining in.

Since becoming internationally recognised as the heart of the house, many have grappled with how they can best deck out their kitchen to live up to this title. One technique for jazzing up a kitchen which is often sidelined is creating the perfect lighting plan.

To help you stay in the know and make the most of this great room, here is a taste of the lighting trends you should capitalise on for the ultimate kitchen in 2014.

1. Pendant lighting
Decorative pendant fixtures above a bar or bench top are brilliant addition to any kitchen. Not only can they can they be very visually appealing on their own, they can complement your bar or bench top beautifully. Kitchen Lighting 3 Oversized pendants or lighting fixtures are also a growing trend, so don’t be afraid to choose fixtures that make a statement. Above the eating area, they can serve as a focal point and centrepiece for a modern kitchen.

2. Dimmers Dimmers are a must in 2014.
They can be adjusted according to the use of the room so you can set the mood to your liking. What’s not to love? Kitchen Lighting 1

4. LED lighting
LED lights are not only more cost-effective than incandescent lights, they also give a whimsical feeling when installed under bench tops, to highlight cabinetry or to illuminate splashbacks. Kitchen-Lighting-Dimmers

5. Sconce lighting
The ongoing trend of fewer upper cabinets in the kitchen opens up more space for decorative task lighting, like sconces. These fixtures are often on adjustable arms, giving the option to have the light directed where you need it most. Look for decorative task fixtures in black, iron and aged brass finishes to really make a statement in your kitchen.
